Plastic Bottles BANNED in North Carolina!

Raleigh Relocation Information

Plastic Bottles Banned From All Landfills in North Carolina

NC Building Nation's Largest Plastic Recycling Plant

Green Movement NC - Plastic Bottles Banned - Green Homes NCAs of Oct. 1, 2009, North Carolina will no longer allow any rigid plastic containers in landfills.  This law applies to any plastic bottle with a neck smaller than the container itself, which includes water bottles, soda bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, and much more.

NC is the first state in the Southeast to forward the green movement with a statewide plastic bottle ban.  Wisconsin and Massachusetts have similar laws, as do a few municipalities across the nation.

Shaw Industries (which manufactures Green Label carpets) is one of the partners building the nation's largest facility to recycle and process plastic bottles, with a maximum capacity of 280 million pounds of material per year!

Amazing that we can manage to use that much plastic in a year, and good to hear it's going to be remade into other products, like Green Label carpets...

What is Passive Solar, and How Can Passive Solar Be Included in Your New Home?

Green Homes Raleigh NC

What is Passive Solar?

How Can Passive Solar Elements Be Included in Your New Home?

A passive solar home can obtain some or even all of it's heating and cooling from the sun, using a variety of materials and construction concepts.

Does a Passive Solar home use solar panels?

A Passive Solar home uses the windows, walls, and floor to collect heat in the winter and reject heat in the summer.  Solar photovoltaic power can be added, but is not required for a home to be defined as "passive solar".

A Passive Solar home can be almost entirely heated by the sun, or can simply have south-facing windows that provide some fraction of the home's heat.

What are the Five Basic Passive Solar Principles?

1. Orientation - Passive Solar Homes

Just remember - it's warmer in the South.  Making sure a home is facing towards the south is very important in a passive solar design.  A passive solar home is also designed to be "longer", stretching from east to west, in order to take more advantage of the sun.

Garages, laundry rooms, and other "lower usage" rooms are often placed on the east or west side of the home.  The kitchen is often placed on the northern side of the home, as it generates it's own heat.  And large, commonly useGreen Home Builders Triangle - Green Homes and Features - Passive Solard living spaces are placed on the south side of the home.

2.  Overhangs and Shading - Passive Solar Homes

Shade is used to keep sun OFF the windows in the summer, and ON the windows in the winter.  Remember, the sun is high overhead in the summer, but follows a lower, southern arc in the winter.

Trees, vines, shrubs, and other landscaping can also help keep the home cool in summer.  And window coverings are very important to keep heat out in the warm weather - including skylight covers!

3.  Insulation - Passive Solar Homes

Insulation helps keep heat IN on cold days, and OUT on warm days.  The right kind of insulation is doubly important in a passive solar home.

Consider an all-inclusive systems approach to insulation like Energy Wise.  No matter what type of insulation is used, proper installation is very important.

4.  Windows - Passive Solar Homes

Windows are an important part of solar design.  A correctly designed passive solar home will include the majority of windows on the south side of the home, to collect that important winter heat.  However, too many windows can prevent the home from staying cool in the summer!

Remember those window shades and covers too.  In a passive solar home, insulated window coverings are worth the investment.

5.  Thermal Mass - Passive Solar Homes

Sit on a brick wall during the summer - it's warm, right?  Materials like brick, stone, tile, and concrete collect heat, but also work well to distribute heat (or cool) temperatures throughout the day and night.

A well-designed thermal mass can include a large stone or brick fireplace, a thick concrete floor (called a Solar Slab), tile or brick flooring, or even a masonry or concrete wall.

Why Energy Wise Just Makes Sense - And How Energy Wise Works

Energy Wise Makes Sense - Here's How it Works!

Energy Wise Becomes Efficiency of Choice for the Triangle

Guaranteed Savings Attracts 3 of 4 Homebuyers

Stanton Homes is pleased to announce a surge in requests for new homes that include green options, with 3 out of 4 expressing keen interest in Energy Wise heating, cooling, and insulation systems.

Energy Wise is a guaranteed cost savings program Stanton Homes offers in partnership with Healthy Home Insulation

EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulation"We're seeing a tremendous amount of interest in the value this product brings to our new homes," said Stan Williams, CEO of Stanton Homes.  "Our partnership with  Healthy Home Insulation and the Energy Wise program enables homebuyers to take advantage of some real bargains, with the knowledge that they're also doing the right thing for our environment and their health."

Energy Wise use a systems approach to heating and cooling a home.

It starts with a precise review of the blueprints, window sizes and types, and even the dimensions of each room.

The HVAC system is precisely calculated.

Bayseal foam insulation is used to fill every crack and crevice, then extensive caulking is added to prevent any air leakage.

The Energy Wise system has been successfully installed in over 40,000 buildings, but has just recently become available in North Carolina.

EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulation"We are very excited about the Energy Wise system that's going into our new Stanton Home," said Navy veteran Ryland Page, whose new home is nearing completion near the western side of the Triangle.

"Energy Wise really appeals to us because it is so thorough and balanced.  Rather than adding a few random upgrades, it is an engineered system. It starts by addressing all three modes of heat transmission in and around the home, from caulking to resist convection, Icynene to resist convection and conduction, and heat rejecting windows to resist radiation. The system is really amazing - incorporating local climate data and solar exposure, and calculating the structure's heat load so well that it was able to guarantee the costs to run the HVAC equipment it has specified for the house."

Energy Wise guarantees 50-70% cost savings on heating and cooling, with a written contract that includes a full energy analysis of the home and even a maximum monthly dollar amount.

Not only that, but an Energy Wise home can also be ENERGY STAR certified, which adds an additional 5% monthly discount from Progress or Duke Energy.

Ryland and his wife Kelly carefully EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulationresearched every part o f their home construction, and worked with Stanton Homes and Healthy Home Insulation to make decisions based on their desires to have a healthy, economically efficient, environmentally responsible home.

"We chose Stanton Homes primarily because of their knowledge of the VA's Specially Adapted Housing requirements, and the Stanton Homes for Heroes program.  We found out about Energy Wise while planning the home," said Page.

"They are a pleasure to work with and our house is turning out great. These guys really do support the troops."

EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulation "At Healthy Home Insulation, we want to offer the healthiest home possible with the absolute best systems on the market," said Tu Nguyen, CEO of Healthy Home Insulation.

"We strongly believe that the Energy Wise system offers exactly that.  Between the engineered HVAC system and the Bayseal foam insulation, we're fully confident in the 50-70% savings guarantee we're able to offer homeowners.  This kind of savings makes a big difference in today's economy, particularly as energy costs continue to rise."

"Our ecology-minded buyers like the Pages are telling us that their first concern is the environment, and the second is the growing cost of energy," said Williams.

"When they find out that an Energy Wise home offers a written guarantee of 50-70% cost savings on heating and cooling over any standard home, and uses fewer natural resources, they're excited."

"Energy Wise's systemic approach to the entire structure made their claims of significant energy savings compelling to us," said Ryland.EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulation

Healthy Home Insulation has years of experience with spray foam insulation, and a dedication to providing quality products and services.

"After obtaining my degree in mechanical engineering, I spent 12 years as a Senior Engineer for several oil companies," said Ngyuen.

"I saw first-hand the alarming global increase in fuel demands.  Energy Wise and spray foam insulation is an extremely viable solution to alleviating our dependence on fossil fuel, while improving our health and protecting the environment for future generations."

Healthy Home Insulation and Stanton Homes both offer free, personal consultations to discuss specific energy requirements for every home, with a precise cost benefit analysis of any floor plan.  Healthy Home Insulation's reputation for quality and responsiveness led HHI to become the first Raleigh area insulation company selected by Energy Wise to offer their system.EnergyWise - Green Building Raleigh NC - New Green Homes Raleigh NC - Healthy Home Insulation

"We looked into the products and techniques used and compared them with standard options," said Page.  "Energy Wise provides a service for something we feel is very important to include in our new home.  The projected energy savings should pay for it in just a few years, and the rest is gravy. "

"Energy Wise is really a hit with homebuyers," said Williams.  "It's a very compelling product, that insulates every facet of a home's thermal envelope - and then leverages the HVAC system to optimally manage it, with the ability to guarantee metering savings."

Hyper-Local Content worth 1000 Points For Everyone That Can.........

Brad and Bob have put together a terrific, fun "contest" with lots of those wonderful points available!

Seriously, this is a great way for any newbie to get started on creating prime, google-hungry local content.... and a good motivator for those of us who've been here for some time.

Via Bob Stewart - ActiveRain (ActiveRain):

......Write a blog post using Brad's suggestions for a neighborhood in your city.

We ran a real estate brokerage prior to starting ActiveRain. This is where Matt Heaton and Jon Washburn, ActiveRain Co-Founders, sharpened their search engine optimization (SEO) skills. One of the things that we found was that the more specific a person was when they searched online, the closer they were to actually making a purchase.

Say what?

We generated lots of leads. At some points we were generating over 100 per day in the state of Washington. Our site ranked well for lots of general city level searches. Searches like:

  • homes for sale in blaine, wa
  • Redmond Wa real estate
  • Longview Washington houses

But we also ranked very well for more long tail searches, especially neighborhood level searches. Searches like:

  • Semiahmoo Blaine homes for sale
  • English Cove Redmond real estate
  • Bankers Corner Longview houses

Semiahmoo, English Cove and Bankers Corner are all neighborhoods within their respective city. Now back to one of the things we found. The more specific a person's search, the closer they were to actually making a purchase. Depending on what study you want to look at, the average internet consumer starts researching real estate online about 8 months prior to buying their home. People that landed on our site, who eventually bought a home with a Brio agent, that used a neighborhood term in the search, took an average of 121 days to buy a home. That's four months, half the time of the average person searching for real estate.

So what?

So start writing more blogs targeted to the neighborhoods in your market. These are the blog posts that allow you to reach the top of the search engines. The competition for these hyper-local terms is much less crowded.

Briorealty.com still ranks #1 for the search term: 'English Cove Redmond' (and English Cove Redmond real estate) and we ha

ven't touched that website in four years. If an ActiveRain member had written a post about that neighborhood using Brad's suggestions I have no question they would rank #1. There are only 3640 competing results for this term. Now remember, way fewer people will do a specific search of this nature compared to 'Redmond Wa Real Estate' but don't you want them to find you when they do......since they are going to be closer to buying something?

Here are some great examples of posts focused to a neighborhood level. Some of these posts actually focus to a specific sub division of homes within a city:

A few Caveats for receiving 1000 points

The post must be written AFTER my post. Meaning you can't just dig up an old post.

The post must be a minimum of 300 words. I'm not going to count but consumers want good information and you need to be able to explain the essence of the community.....it should be somewhere close to that length.

You need to READ BRAD's POST. You need to study the post. You need to implement his suggestions. He gives some SUPER HELPFUL pointers that I would like you to adopt in your post. The purpose of this is not to get 1000 points. The purpose is to write a blog post that ranks well in the search engines and focuses on a specific neighborhood in your market. Use this exercise to incorporate the things Brad discusses and get busy dominating hyper local search results in your town.

Since you read all the way to the end, a bonus........you can do one post a day for the next week. And I'll give you 1000 for each post. (that's 7000 points total) Don't half-ass it. This isn't for the points. This is for you to get better at writing neighborhood level posts that target consumers. Every time you write a post, I need you to come back and leave a link to the post. That way I can award your points. So in seven days this post should have TONS of links to quality neighborhood level posts. The link should be the title of your blog post linking back to the post. That way, if your title is no good, we can help you fix it. Of course, YOU ARE GOING TO READ BRAD'S POST so your titles will be great.

It's late in the day today. You have until tomorrow night July 23rd at 11:59pm (CST) to get your first link up. Then every 24 hours after that you can put an

other link up for the next six days. 7 days in total ending on July 29th. If you do one tonight, then don't do one tomorrow.....since the 22nd and the 23rd are counting as one day.

Ready, Set, GO!!!!

(EDITED: If you are not a real estate agent. Hang tight. I am working with a few people for a series of similar challenges specific to the other professionals on the site. I think I have a pretty good idea for Stagers and Mortgage people and even inspectors. Appraisers I'm a little stumped on what to do for you guys. Any ideas?)
